5 Tips for Meeting the Parents in a Multicultural Relationship
The Big Meet
Meeting the parents is stressful enough. Throw in a language barrier or cultural expectations, and it’s a minefield.
1. Do Your Homework
Ask your partner about specific taboos. Should you take off your shoes? Is a handshake okay, or should you bow? Bringing a small gift (like fruit or sweets) is universally safe and appreciated.
2. Learn a Few Phrases
Even if they speak English, saying “Hello” and “Thank you” in their native language shows respect and effort. It breaks the ice instantly.
3. Dress Conservatively
Until you know the family vibe, err on the side of formal. You can always roll up your sleeves later, but you can’t un-wear ripped jeans.
